Yep, it was Yuri Andropov - an unreconstructed top politburo gangster, a spy and provocateur - who was promoted by many in the West as an intellectual and a "closet liberal". BS - he wasn't. He was one tough ol' customer. I didn't know that he was the son of a Cossack nobleman and of a daughter of a German/Russian businessman. It is surprising that he had such a great career, that Stalin didn't hand him his head on a platter.
