Yup, calcium is kind of complicated. People get plenty of it in normal diet. Supplementation of calcium for increasing bone density is about as brain dead than low fat diet in order to get thin. BTW, one thing that has not been mentioned is the havok calcium can create in brain, in addition to other undesirable places calcium can turn up (arterial plaque). Based on my understanding, the best approach is not to supplement. Whatever amount you get from diet, it needs to be absorbed, and it is just fine when eating getting it from fish / meat, since they have supply lysine one needs to absorb calcium. Then once absorbed, it is important to have have good level of D3 (60+), take some K2 supplement and also, enough magnesium to balance it. So as you can see, there are several things that need to "nudge" normal amount of calcium, so that it goes to right places without causing damage. So consider how smart it is to drop a calcium bomb (often done by medical doctors) without considering any of the above. The result is nothing good happens, but, SURPRISE! , your neighborhood doctor is happily waiting for this, so that he can prescribe heavy guns big pharma has at its disposal (nevermind the side effects). And patient thinks: "The doctor really tried. He put me on calcium supplementation, but it didn't help. I must be so screwed up, I really need these medications". To be fair, some people (mostly women) may be so far gone that they actually have no other option. But these days, bone density tests, like cholesterol tests are used as a trolling strategy, trolling for patients. If you scare them enough, they will keep coming for tests, statins, bone density meds etc... Joe
