I use to think Kunstler was a bit of a kook, but the more I've read (and seen) the more I realized he's simply ahead of the game and seeing the situation in the broadest context. His writing veers towards the alarmist and he may be too pessimistic as to timeframes. The system is more robust than he acknowledges and will take time to bring down. But fundamentally I think he's right.

But here's the problem: no politician can say, much less do, what K advocates. It would be political suicide. The sheep won't tolerate someone telling them that the world has irrevocably changed and that we won't be getting our toys any more. People can't imagine a world truly different than the one we live in. And they can't link long-range enough to take or support action. It's the failure of our species, not the system.

And that, more than anything else, is why we're screwed.

I just started reading Diamond's book, "Collapse," and in it, early on, he mentioned offhandedly how it is nearly inconceivable that the United States would collapse any time soon.

How quickly things change. He wrote that just 2-3 years ago, as I recall. Fictitious capital has a way of dissolving rather abruptly when moment of recognition has arrived.

I agree with him when he says something has to change, and fast. So far, the wrong policy has been continued. I have little hope that a good move will be made before it is too late now. Maybe they think it's too late, so the looting will simply continue as long as possible.
