I think Sullivan's point is that the Bush administration did spend a ton of money it did not have and it did do some things which conservatives would normally abhor (no child left behind)....but the so-called conservative wing of the republican party didn't seem to feel the need to challenge its leadership on those things.

Now, there were plenty of conservative posters on SI and other threads that were very unhappy with the spending (Medicare Part d, farm bill) and the intervention in private lives..(Terry Schaivo) and involvement in local government issues (No Child) ...but were repubicans?
