So the real question is can we move the needle enough to make life unsustainable or at the very least to impact our environment enough that it costs us a lot of pain and money?

AGAIN.. uh-hmm.. LIFE WAS VERY WELL ESTABLISHED WHEN CO2 LEVELS OF 10 TIMES HIGHER THAN TODAY!!!

It just won't be the cozy kind of life that you have grown used to. But not to worry, most of humanity won't be here by that time, or we'll have move out into the stars to colonize more suitable planets.

Of that I have no doubt. But will we survive ourselves?

I think you have more to fear from a Solar EMP events (and consequent planetary chaos) or nuclear/biological annihilation than you do from GW.
