To me, the idea of the market mechanism creating actual assets is part and parcel of the 'cash settled' markets.

The middle man creates and destroys virtual underlying assets on demand. Naked Shorts, Commodities, standardized equity options and CDS markets come to mind.

The existence of these products may be desirable, but there need to be limits of some sort. Perhaps one way is to DEMAND delivery.

Someplace along the way we have forgotten that the markets exist only to provide liquidity for actual underlying commerce. The stock market is there to facilitate capital raising. The commodities markets to facilitate transfer of physical commodities. They do not exist to provide a living for speculators (including me).
