Mr combjelly,

Re: "Volume was limited due to the low-k dielectric peeling and nuking entire wafers.
Plus, there was a problem with the floating body effect limiting the clock rate on many chips."

Yep, no production problems recently ... Wonder why the OEM's might have been
nervous ... Hmmmm

Re: Volume was limited

I think that's Intel FUD. My vendor at the time, Appro, had plenty of chips but had designed their systems around the Solectron boards. They had samples of the solectron boards in house, I had access to final specs and manuals, they were just waiting for volume production product when Solectron was extorted into not shipping product. Appro had pleny of Opterons but I had to wait for either an Arima or MSI board to become available (they were in very short supply, since Solectron had been AMD's primary launch partner).

The only problem with Opteron's launch was Intel's sabotage.

Remember the whitebox Asus motherboards that had no official existence?
