And if conservatives were true to their values and really wanted government out of our lives, shouldn't they be the first to agree? I've don't understand this seemingly contradiction. Do you want government to run our lives or not?

Some conservatives, but religious folks of any stripe (including Obama), believe marriage is primarily a religious institution and that god does not condone gay marriage. Furthermore - there is a fear that once it becomes law - some churches may come under attack both physically (see California) and legally to be forced to do things that are against their religion aka the word of god.

Other conservatives such as myself who have little use for god, do not care so much that gays do or don't get married - I do however fear the textbooks that will be foisted upon parents of 1st graders that have to acknowledge the various family structures and explain them to their young children. I also like letting them believe in Santa as long as possible. In the end it'll probably all work out just fine - let the people of each state decide as the constitution allows.
