>This is exactly what the music industry has come down to. Recording execs have to tell us who is worth listening to.

It's always been that way. At least, as long as there's been a music industry.

Ted, > Simon may be arrogant but his opinion is respected for a reason.

The problem is that people just can't decide for themselves. They have to listen to a guy like Simon before deciding whether a singer is good or not.

And I'm not talking about those who clearly suck like William Hung. I'm talking about those who actually sing well but then get unfairly roasted by Simon. I'm also talking about those who are good but not exceptional, yet get vaulted into fame because Simon said so.

I used to think that way. The truth is most all of the contestants sing well. This year, for an example, I would say Scott M. is the only one of the final contestants who doesn't sing all that well. Having said that, singing well is not enough to make it into the industry. You have to have some uniqueness, some versatility, a strong drive and a commercial look doesn't hurt. Very few of the top five in any year become a Carrie Underwood.

Cowell is looking for that star quality...anything less is not worth his time. I see his POV now for the first time. Unfortunately, he is brutal in conveying his opinion and has no empathy at all for the recipient. That makes him an asshole.
