But there is no excuse for denying people equal rights because churches would like that, or the Bible is *believed* to be in line with it. That, imo, is ridiculous- unless one lives in a religious country where the ridiculous is codified in to law. People should, by all means, do whatever they believe the bible tells them to, if they want to (whether that's shunning gay people or selling their homes in advance of the end times)- provided they don't interfere with the legal rights of others, either by personally interfering, or by attempting to hijack the machinery of the state for religious purposes. And even if people want to discriminate against gays just because they don't like them, again, that's not an adequate reason to deny them their civil rights. No one has to have a gay person over to their house, or even shake their hand- but you can't make the laws of this country, this secular country, with a separation of church and state, be the same way. And quite frankly, I don't admire vigilantes. I admire Gandhi and MLK. Guys with guns trying to change things strike me as pussies and the worst sort of blight on society. But that's me. Nothing wrong with guns but they are a lot like bombs- you just don't have to be very brave to carry or use one, and the folks who do tend to wave them around tend to be a trifle nutty. It's the folks who don't huff and puff about their guns who strike me as the more responsible owners. The braggarts are probably the same folks who leave their guns out for the kiddies to find, or who blow their own toes off. I am not sympathetic to the idea of a bunch of armed folks facing off against one another- that's what we see in places like Iraq, and it's not my cup of tea. But I know some people like to dream of such things (and I'm not suggesting you do, but some of the posts you read full of gun love make me wonder about some of the folks on SI. Lots of Freudian stuff wrapped up in a gun.)
