Wow, who'd of thunk it? <"The thing you have to understand about Dubai is – nothing is what it seems," Karen says at last. "Nothing. This isn't a city, it's a con-job. They lure you in telling you it's one thing – a modern kind of place – but beneath the surface it's a medieval dictatorship. >

Who sold Dubai were the Brits. Not the Ruler. It is a former protectorate of the British Empire. As such the Rulers always came to the British for advice.

They advised him to do like Spain, build houses for the people with overvalued hogged currency. The whole thing ran on itself. The houses were being occupied by people who were constructing houses and other projects.

And people coming in decided to buy instead of renting so he would rent later on for the next sucker.

Being a long term expat who had seen many booms and busts helps you to see places for what they really are and not buy into the propaganda.

They got people who lived in a small flat and put them to live a life they only saw on Hollywood movies. The cars were very cheap and the gasoline too.

Instead of saving money they were spending it all. I talked with a the South African singer of music group who performed in a bar once.

She told me early 90s people would make money and would go away with some money. Then, 2006, no one was making money the money was staying in Dubai because they newcomers were not Elmat caliber who work to save and invest instead of spending. The new comers worked and flashed their "wealth".

I sat down in the cafe in the Emirates Mall and I have never ever seen so many pretty women and well dressed people concentated in a single place. I used to say to my wife -for whom a week in Dubai was a bribe for her and Experiment to come to Tehran when I was there.

"This is the young guys attracting their girlfriends or wives to spend their money here. For you only one week!!"

Today my money is safe and sound in BRL in Curitiba.

'Yes, the Dubai market has a dynamic of its own. The way the Government is creating new knowledge-based cities is creating the demand for this supply.
