In general I agree, but this was a case of a slight majority (and big money from out of state lobbyists) aiming to use state power to deny what should be considered a basic human right subject to equal protection, just like the courts struck down a lot of racial separation laws.

The courts exist to protect us from tyrannical majorities, thank goodness. The legislature can't make you and I go to church, can't take away your gun, can't bar an Asian immigrant neighbor from moving in next door, and so on, even if there are parts of the country where local majorities would certainly vote to do just that.
