AFAIK, legal rights bestowed by marriage are supposed to be recognized on a reciprocal basis, like most state to state issues. For example, if abortion were illegal in one state, I don't think they could prosecute one of their citizens for going to a neighboring state to get one if it's legal there. So a gay couple resident in Arkansas should have their marriage rights from a Massachusetts ceremony recognized in a probate proceeding in Little Rock.

Maybe the lawyers here could chime in on that.

It's another way for society to come to accept the process and the reality. At least the issue is being fought straight up instead of being buried in some kind of "don't ask, don't tell" half-ass coverup.
