then I realized the people playing were serious.

Actually I find it utterly trivial, a game played within the base that has no impact outside. We know how the bases will vote every time so the sound and fury signifies exactly nothing for actual political outcomes.

The sad part is watching supposed adults wallow in childish playground insults and sixth-grade "gang" behavior. Lots of arrested emotional development out there.

I think you described such behavior best when you called it "performance art."

They seem to do it for their buddies as much as for themselves.
