The American people have spoken. They said they couldn't care less. So should the rest of us.

Why?

That is utterly ridiculous. If this were to matter to me, I really could care less about a "general consensus of the American people."

It matters or it does not. A large group of people deciding it does not matter, does not affect how I feel about the topic. I might feel better if they agree with me, but I won't change my mind simply because they choose to accept it and move on.

What a strange way to think.
