Probably not, and for good reason. The 3 Gorges dam sits on a fault line and that's a lot of water weight to put on something like that. It's also likely to face serious silting issues that will increase wear on their turbines and could eventually clog up the turbine intakes.

Apparently the Chinese are building dams farther up to mitigate this silting issue, but I don't know how they can protect against an earthquake. That would just be utterly devastating to anything downstream of it, should it break (and I pray it never occurs).

But that aside, I think it will be pretty difficult to muster sufficient political will to do another TVA. But we must recall that TVA was built for the same purpose as 3 Gorges, flood control.

And I definitely agree.. time will tell..

BTW, I think I have a pretty good idea for resolving the silting issue, at least in the proximity of the dam, if you have any connections to such folks. Of course, I would like a consulting and inventor's fee.. ;0)
