I am respectful of models from the past. But I fully recognize that they have to be treated in context.

Just because the US Army brutalized and slaughtered Native American populations in the past doesn't remotely suggest that tribes nowadays have anything to fear from the Army. I think we can be confident that that couldn't happen in the US we now live in.

Models from the past are useful but they they don't repeat identically through time and circumstance. They inform us but they aren't absolutes.
