Brazil Poll: Approval For Govt Falls To 62.4% Vs 72.5% Article
The poll showed opposition governor Jose Serra leading government-backed presidential candidate Dilma Rousseff in a possible election matchup by a margin of 45.7% to 16.3%.

BRASILIA (Dow Jones)--Approval for the government of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has declined 10 percentage points under the influence of a bleak economic outlook, according to a poll released by the Sensus opinion research institute Monday.

The poll showed approval for the government dropped to 62.4% in March from 72.5% in a previous poll held in January. The figure was the lowest seen since April 2008.

The poll Monday also showed slippage in the personal popularity of President Lula, which fell to 76.2% from an all-time high of 84% in January.

According to data in Monday's poll, the decline in the government's approval rating came alongside growing concerns over unemployment and declining incomes. The latest survey showed that 54.5% of respondents had detected a worsening of unemployment, compared with 38.5% in the previous poll. Similarly, 32.6% had detected a decline in incomes compared with 23.2% in the previous poll.

Meanwhile, the figures released Monday appeared to improve the prospects for the election of an opposition candidate ahead of next year's presidential elections.

The poll showed opposition governor Jose Serra leading government-backed presidential candidate Dilma Rousseff in a possible election matchup by a margin of 45.7% to 16.3%.

The poll released Monday was taken among 2000 respondents in 136 cities nationwide between March 23 and March 27, and has a margin of error of 3 percentage points.
