It is not clear to me what the FED, or for that matter the government could do to enhance technology. I think a bit more objectivity is deserved. There is a role for the public sector when there is obvious private market failure. R&D is certainly one of those areas where gov't can step in an "guide" and "nudge" the private market to develop technologies that would never have been created due to the long-term profit cycle (space program, jet engines, highway system,.. etc). There's certainly a role for government in the current crisis, namely to pick up the slack in the demand curve left by boycotting consumers. But I'm not particularly impressed on what has been proposed thus far. I would like to see more money spent in re-training of unemployed workers, because people are our greatest investment, in addition to being our primary consumers. And I think some government investments in nano-technology would serve us well. Additionally, while I like the idea of mag-lev trains, I think the initial program could have been placed someone better than between LA and Las Vegas. And more importantly, we need to work on the electrical grid FIRST before we start developing all of these programs that will place an even greater demand upon it. And that's where the Obama stimulus package utterly fails with regard to energy policy. It focuses upon replacing baseline power with part-time generation capacity and that's an invitation to economic disruption, if not disaster. It SHOULD be focusing on increasing baseline power, especially Geo-Thermal, or possibly wave generated. Solar and Wind are fair weather technologies and a waste of government resources. Hawk
