Hi GZ; Re Pirates == terrorists,

The term "piracy" is an ancient one, Julius Caesar got captured by some as a youth. "Terrorist" is someone who attempts to make others feel terror. Using that definition, one could call a mugger a terrorist. Okay you're right. But you're making an argument in favor of not using the military to hunt terrorists and I'm not sure that's where you're going.

As a practical matter, piracy carries a US sentence for life in prison. If I were a skinny Somali 17-year-old, I'd prefer to get tagged for being a terrorist.

US prisons are not filled with nice people. I'd take Guantanamo over a U.S. (i.e. Federal) Penitentiary any day. Heck throw in weekly waterboarding, I'd still take Guantanamo. For those unsure which would be better, try a google search for, say, Aryan Nation and Lompoc.

P.S. I should add that this has not been a test of Obama. He hasn't had enough time to get himself in much trouble. But the repercussions could be some sort of a very small test.

On the other hand, there's nothing like rattling the saber to get the people behind you. And there's nothing in the rule book that says that Socialists are not allowed to shake that sword. Hitler did it rather well. And I would think that starting a "police action" to solve Somalia's problems might work out better than the President's silly policy on global warming. But either way, I think a Republican picks up the presidency in 2012.
