Many people rant and say things on the internet, and to people whom they know, that are quite as out there as Mr. Wright's statements. Some of the more bizarre rants of the right are the equal to Mr. Wright's rants, and the do not come with the excuse of having experienced being a truly second class citizen- they come only with the imaginative belief that white America is somehow under attack because it can't be allowed to dominate America entirely, and it also seems to have the belief that not being able to force Christian cant on everyone via the state, is somehow "discrimination" against Christians- to name but two of the odd rants of the right- there are many many more. We've seen several of them on this thread from time to time.

How can the imaginatively oppressed be expected to understand those who have truly experienced oppression? They do not seem to be compatible.

Sam - you make a lot of assumptions in this post. First, there is the assumption Wright and or Obama have experienced some kind of horrible racism and they're trying to understand it. Wright is probably a millionaire with a Doctorate degree. Seems to me his country treated him pretty well. He was able to achieve an excellent education 98% of the country have been unable to achieve.
Barack Obama went to Columbia and Harvard for goodness sake. The opportunities he's been offered by America have been stupendous, when compared to anywhere else on earth. What nation would you rather be a man of mixed color? Where on earth would you be given more opportunities in life to succeed?

I never bought into the white guilt hysteria, which seemed to perpetuate any criticism of Obama or his policies. He uses race as a vote achieving mechanism, where criticism is not allowed, and if you don't vote for me you must harbor some kind of racist attitude. I could care less what the color, or ethnicity of the President is, and I suspect most Americans feel the same way.

I grew up in Washington D.C. I was a minority in my hometown. Something like 10% of the kids in High School were white. If you don't think I never experienced racism, you've never had a similar upbringing. So, the insinuation I grew up in some kind of Leave it to Beaver lily white America, couldn't be further from the truth. That's one of the reasons I feel comfortable discussing race, and criticizing people like Wright for preaching victim hood status to so many. You don't preach victim hood and blame to lift people out of poverty. You preach about America as the land of opportunity and the importance education places on accessing that opportunity. You also preach about the value of serving the country in the military, or the value of having an entrepreneurship spirit by starting a small business.

What I wouldn't do is blame the country for the actions of a few ignorant fools. And I would never cast a wide net against people of color the way Wright did in his sermons "blaming" the white man for everything under the sun.

That's called anti-American racism. And Wright preached it on more than one occasions in his church. Obama could have chosen any church in Chicago, but elected to listen to and have his children listen to, a racist victim-hood hate America preacher, dreaming up all kinds of conspiracy theories, pretending it was linked with Afrocentric religious doctrine.

Having said that, I don't believe Obama bought into everything he heard from the crazy foul mouthed Wright. But, I do think he thought some of his rantings had merit, otherwise, he would have felt the same as you or I and left the church long ago.

BTW, I noticed you didn't answer my question on whether you would attend a church preaching similar garbage.

I think I can guess why.
