I am curious.......why do you think they are so blasé? Is it the cost or something else? I mean in L'Aquila every structure has been condemned......that's a city of 70k.

You have to realize that italy is a very old country. There are literally 1500 year old structures in basically every township and city. The cost of upgrading (and how do you do that by the way?) every "church" in italy would be staggering.

Good point. The cost would be prohibitive.

But that shouldn't excuse them from insuring that new structures are seismically reinforced. Any number of the relatively new structures in L'Aquila, including the hospital, suffered serious damage and some even 'pancaked'.....the fourth floor dropping to the first floor. That's why so many university students died.....their 4 story dorm pancaked. I hope these losses will force a change in the construction codes.
