I'm not one to micro-manage such things. I personally think a camera phone would be fine if the parent were first satisfied that the child would use it responsibly, and were willing to monitor how the child used it.

It's all in the quality of parenting and the environment. My nieces spent two years in Seoul Korea wandering all over town with their cells and never had a problem.

When I was that age I wanted a pistol and my parents trusted me to get one when I was thirteen. I carried it on my trapline and a year or so later I earned enough money to buy a .44 magnum. I never abused that trust.

It was a different world back then. Nobody thought it was strange that I brought my sheath knife to sophomore speech class for my assigned sales talk. I got an A on it too. These days I'd probably be in that detention center for such a stunt.
