"No argument with you from me on that; but the anti-gun control people here don't seem to place any stock in those casualties, or they are more than made up for by all the supposed defense numbers."

I think most people are in favor of some form of gun control (for example, depriving felons of the right to own guns).

Regarding domestic violence and suicide, let's posit that 1,000,000 Americans die due to that violence every year (an extreme case for the purpose of making a point) ... how does that effect my decision on whether or not to own a gun, carry a gun, keep a gun in my house?

It goes back to the issue of

(1) are guns good for society?

Imo that is a resounding "NO!!!" Guns are not good for society, nor are pocket knives or sharp pointed sticks

versus

(2) should I keep a gun?

The answer to which will depend on the time and situation ... right now keep a gun in the office = yes, keep one on my person = no, keep one at home = no. Those answers will change over time and depending where I live or work ... owning a shotgun makes no sense right now, but there was a time it did make sense, on account of I had a friend who had a farm where we shot clay pigeons.

I am sorry for all the people who are constantly dying in great numbers (okay that is a lie, it is the natural order of things for people to die in great numbers), but I don't see why that should determine my decision regarding ownership of guns.
