Perhaps the use of "assault weapon" to refer to semi-auto weapons was a deliberate tactic to confuse the issue, to make people think that the laws covering this topic where concerned with banning (fully) automatic weapons when they are not.


Of course it was. "Assault rifle" has a military definition of full auto. Assault weapon can mean whatever they wanted it to mean. Sounds evil and scary and they banned the evil and scary guns. Probably the most stupid piece of ineffective "feel good" legislation ever passed. It died a good death.
