Mary;

We did not get into this mess because we borrowed too much money helping people create jobs in a renewable energy industry, in updating our infrastructure, in making our health care industry more efficient,.....

No we got into this mess by borrowing too much money to build new homes, buy new big screen TV's, buy big SUV's and by borrowing by business to invest. You want to exchange this borrowing and spend and BORROW by the government for infrastructure and health care and education. Me too, but to suggest this is somehow magic borrowing without the down side is just false in my opinion.

spending spree on conspicuous and mindless consumption of luxury living.

Yes, but that's what made our economy roar. Now that we are all watching what we spend on - fewer and smaller cars, fewer big screen TV's and a LOT fewer homes and offices - lots and lots of people will lose their jobs and will not be paying taxes.

Borrowing money to get our banking system working again and investing in America and the American people is different.

Yes it is different. Before you borrowed on your own consumption, now you are borrowing (tax obligations) on government consumption. It is a fair argument how much of this we can do without big future harm.
