Look at 'united' Germany. Now 20 years after the 're unification', East Germany just like South Italy is still very similar to a Mezzogiorno project. Billions have been pumped into infra structure there and every tax payer pays a so called Solidarity Adder to their 'normal' taxes, purpose of which is -r rather initially was - to help investing in needy infra structures in the East.

I don't think they are the same. East Germany is behind the West because it was a soviet satellite for 45 years.....it doesn't have a history of second status. In fact, Merkel is from the East. Southern Italy does has a history of second status.......the North generally has been more prosperous for centuries. Naples is a 'hell' hole; Venice a 'jewel'. Once the current generation is dead, I suspect East Germany will be on par with the West. I don't know if S. Italy will ever be the economic equal of the North.

Basically, just put your head in the sand, turn your back on them and - pay for that to keep your conscience calm.

So give up on being one country eh? Great idea...every country in the world should jettison their economically underdeveloped regions.
