To kill a president, you either have to be close enough to use a gun, bomb or other weapon, or you have to be a good enough sniper to pick him off at a distance.

Modern presidents rarely have anyone get within 100 feet or more who hasn't been checked and cleared; it's not that hard to keep a constant secure bubble around the man, as long as he isn't allowed to go wandering down the street whenever he likes.

As for snipers, it's a similar situation. On the rare occasions Obama will be outside in a vulnerable position, the sniper angles and ranges have been figured in and swept. If not, he will be under cover or a shield of some kind.

There is a slight outside chance someone could get through anyway, but I really wouldn't lose any sleep over it. The typical angry shooter with a blunt, visceral desire to get the president will never get close enough.

That's why we haven't had a serious assassination attempt since Hinckley and Reagan 28 years ago. Presidents don't walk out onto sidewalks where the crowd has not been swept in advance.
