The brokers were heavily front running large orders from mutual funds and hedge funds.

One result are all the ads you see on Bloomberg and CNBC for services like Pipeline, Archipelago, and others which use algorithms to try to hide buying and selling from the various sharks, or disguise the buyer and seller.

Front running is an easy mistake to make.
If you take a position and as an afterthought decide to put a client in it too.
You're front running.
