but you have to show politicians (the people?) that you're a "non-profit"... a benevolent group. Religions have been given VERY SPECIAL status based on this assumption especially since most of them have preaching "the word of god" as their main purpose. Not exactly your typical "mission statement" of a non-profit organization. Compare it to a museum or concert hall. Preaching the word of God is a very good mission for many practical reasons - the cultivation of morality which is good for itself as well as fostering success and not failure in life, the teaching of time honored family values which work to safeguard children, the instilling of positive purpose in lives, the turning around of disastrous lifestyles, the cultivation of better physical and mental health (according to studies), the fostering of greater generosity and social giving (again according to studies) ..... <And I don't accept that not taking money away from someone is a tax expenditure.> That's because it's NOT. But that is beside the point, and you know it. There thousands (tens of?) of institutions, preachers, workers, etc (mansions, expensive cars) and Billions of dollars flowing and riding on special status. I think most of those institutions do more than enough good in the world to justify their cost. <The ability to feel guilt is a good thing. > And being forced to do so is abuse... common... that was an ignorant thing to say. When I was younger, I might have thought so. I know better now. Guilt, the ability to feel it, is what makes us human. Without guilt we are psychopaths.
