"The Environmental Protection Agency will announce later today that it has concluded that carbon dioxide and five other greenhouse gases are a danger to public health and welfare, the Associated Press reports.

The Washington Post is carrying a similar report.

The news agency, quoting congressional officials briefed by the EPA, says the move would amount to taking the first step to regulating pollution linked to climate change. The AP says the sources spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement had not yet been made.

Such a regulation would have broad economic and social impact, from requiring more fuel efficient automobiles to limiting carbon dioxide emissions from power plants and industrial sources, the AP says.

The EPA's statement would start the clock ticking on a 60-day comment period before it issues a final ruling.
