(I think you might be reading a bit much into a supposed 'smirk'. Certainly any one that did not involve a custom-made leather bomber jacket, giant banner, and aircraft carrier as political props.... :-)

Arguably the two most important achievements of the entire foreign trip were 1) introduction of our new leader to Euroland leaders, and the stitching together of enough cohesion on economic policies so as to be able to avoid the dreaded 'global economies collapsing in disarray' appellation, and 2) the clever strategic implications of the Turkey trip (positioning the US stronger vs. Russia and increasing leverage on Iran while moving chess pieces to ultimately diffuse Islamic threats).

However, both gambits are likely to mostly bear fruit over the longer-term....
