It's a common response when something is ridiculed for being marginal and inoffensive; the mere act of noticing it existed suddenly implies secret fear and worry that it is actually a formidable monster. A cheap rhetorical trick to say rah-rah for my side and crap on the Others, even when the original fact and declaration was entirely the opposite. But it's part of the spin game, so the faithful believe and repeat, faithfully.
