I would have thought this insane until 6 months ago. I can see a State that has a surplus e.g. Texas in wanting to rid themselves of their share of the trillions in liabilities wracked up by the Federal Gov't.

Is a game of chicken being started in which both choices -- stay or secede -- are crazy? Will States begin acting out their part of the Prisoner's Dilemma? Cut our losses now before others beat them to the punch and trap them and/or make massive losses inevitable?

I hadn't thought about this angle when that Russian dude predicted the breakup of the US within a few years. Survivalist impulses to get out at any cost can be a powerful force. And in the past 12-16 years, the polarization of American has only gathered momentum making it easy for some States to justify looking out for Number 1.
