<The Simonyi chair was created in 1995. Dawkins just retired in 2008. Its unlikely that creation of the chair or the appointment of Dawkins to fill it had anything to do with a response to "creationists". >

I didn't SAY THAT! IN fact there are zillions of "chairs" filled by scientists ALL OVER THE PLACE! Why is DAWKINS so "important" to you? Because he's very public and writes books about all this.... why is he "somebody"?? Not because he has a "chair"... he's SOMEBODY because he sells books.... he sells books because CREATIONISTS have given him an issue to write about!!

<Dawkins however had begun campaigning against religion long before he got the chair. >

So? That's part of the point! His "fame" and public "import" is because you guys are drawn to him AND he to you like moths to flames.

<I'm sure that wasn't Simonyi's purpose>

GUY, you still miss the big picture of my point. Benefactors like him chose science because they perceive that as being the best way to help the most people... SCIENCE that is... NOT religion or supporting a religious order.

Which relates directly to :

<<Regardless, the point I was making when I posted the original piece is that there is strong evidence religion involvement is good for young people.>>

Which I don't disagree with... but the fact is religions have lost much credibility vs science over the past several hundred years. To me the reason is obvious... and in fact people are CORRECT in that assessment of history. Religion must try and get their house in order if they want to be relevant.

Science Friday on NPR had a playright on speaking about Science and Religion and how it used to live together just fine but has become very polarized over the past couple decades. She perceives a "war n science" FWIW.

religion involvement is good for young people.

Actually, getting a lot of attention from adults is good for young people. Churches have a tendency to accuse secular organizations of pedophilia whenever they begin a youth group so there is not an accurate comparison. The religious teachings are as harmful as any wakko pseudo-science since they teach that magic is the primary force behind the universe and consciousness.
