Consider how much of each State's costs produce arguably no benefit -- the war in Iraq, the nuclear arsenal, etc. The US wouldn't let e.g. the Rep. of Texas be nuked because of the fallout. Alaska get much more than they pay in; California pays in much more than it gets out; etc. The Fed gov't used to be big plus, but when the future of a state is used to backstop psychotic traders on Wall Street, the equation changes for everybody.

And of course it's realistic, in the sense it's *possible* just not necessarily practical or beneficial. I suspect they would be worse off on their own. They'd have to fight off the Mexican drug cartels on their own, for one thing.
