I toured his home in Key West a couple of years ago. There were cats all over the place. They are protected by law, but I recently read that the city is thinking of stopping the support because of cut backs. Many of the cats were ancestors of his favorite polydactyl cat Snow Ball, and many of them had six toes.

Who knew? Hemmingway was a truly American writer, even if he did write about Europe quite a bit..
