My Dad wasn't really talkative, and I learned more about his military service by snooping through the chest where he kept his navigation instruments, medals, and insignias than he ever really talked about.

When he was a young marine he was quite a scrap booker and he did leave that for us, which the whole family treasures now. There's a picture of Shirley Temple he took when she visited his ship, the USS Northampton. She was a child then.

Mom doesn't talk family history much either.

My pard's father recognizes the historical value of his life and knowledge and is taking steps to preserve it. I'm sort of helping with that. I know a lot more of his stories than I do my own Dad's, which is a pity.

Everybody should learn as much as they can from their parents. Parents often don't realize that what they did is history, and their recollection of it is priceless.

We are guilty of the same thing. We should write down stuff for our children.

Do as much of that as you can....Life is short, and there will be times later you'll wish you had. I do genealogy as a hobby, and even if I had talked to them quite a bit....I will come across something I wish I could ask them...
