Sam, I'm not doubting the greenhouse effect but we never see any numbers which relate to the actual concentrations of CO2 and temperature effect in the atmosphere.

The facts are that CO2 is not the major greenhouse gas in the earth's atmosphere by a huge margin and it constitutes a very low percentage of the gases in the atmosphere. It also only traps a very narrow band of infrared energy and a large proportion of what is intercepted by CO2 is re-radiated in any case.

The reality is probably that the overall effects of warming due to man made CO2 is insignificant when compared to the total effects of the sun, other gases and natural sources of CO2 that are outside our control.

Atmospheric CO2 has always fluctuated and sources like underground coal fires (which have burned for thousands of years and continue to burn), volcanos, plant respiration (at night) forest fires etc. have injected far more CO2 into the atmosphere over the ages than the relatively small amount that is directly attributable to man.

The facts are that CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere have been much higher in the past than they are now and no "thermal runaway" or long term irreversible changes occurred then. So why should they now?

By putting all this undue emphasis on man made CO2 we are tilting at windmills and it will end as effectively as Don Quixote attempts at the same.

Of course I am inclined to believe that burning more witches may be just as effective as carbon trading schemes and would cost a lot less. (As long as we use wood fires and plant more trees, the process would be carbon neutral).....
