As to your question about why we humans continue to overpopulate...

In third world countries, a large family *is* the social security system. If you are elderly and cannot work any longer to sustain yourself, you'd better have younger relatives who will do it for you.

Agrarian cultures require the manpower of larger families.

And here in what's left of the first world: there are enormous, tax-free businesses that profit from their members having as many new customers as possible, and so discourage small families and encourage gigantic families. Not all families can afford to behave as they demand, but they demand (or heavily encourage) it nevertheless. It's good for the bottom line.
