I think its appropriate to segregate subjects by topic. So accordingly I can address the Catholic church on the subject of religion vs science separately from the Catholic church on suppression of religious heresy and other things. Those other things aren't relevant to this thread imo.

I limit the Catholic churches anti-science activity to Galileo cause I don't know of anything else they've done in that area. And despite requests for documentation of anything else in that area, I haven't seen another example brought forth.

which is precisely why you don't see the Catholic Church as an historical oppressor of science (and therefore truth).... you seem to think that there is some nice little comfy compartment over here for science, and over here for "religious belief"

I don't see the Catholic church as an historical oppressor of science because I can't think of any examples of it oppressing science except for Galileo. Saying the church has been wrong on spiritual or doctrinal issues doesn't mean its been anti-science in being so. Spiritual and doctrinal issues aren't scientific issues.

, in which case there would be no "creationsits" or "Dawkins & Dennets". :))

I don't think the Catholic church has anything to do with either of those.

I'm sidestepping nothing, one: this is not the right thread, secondly... there are absolutely reeeeeeems of information pertaining to this debate

I consider that a bluff. If there were reems of information, you could point me to a bit of it. Simply assuring that its out there somewhere isn't convincing. Thats what they say about space aliens.

YOU however seem to think that somehow, since you provided a link on the topic and I haven't, that you are the holder of truth on the topic.

Well, I've gone looking for evidence and come up with information that I can provide. Better than saying I know the "truth" but I won't tell where anyone else can find it.

That's fine but I would subit that the truth is out there, and we have to find it, I've found mine, and update it daily as I wander through the day... You seem upset that I'm not helping you update yours... but there are more knowlegable folks on the topic. I can only give you my opinion... you haven't found 'em yet!

You're getting a little Fox Mulder you know.

<And the issue of religion and science have a bearing on what s/b and can be taught in schools. >

I disagree that this tangential topic of Catholic Church history is relevant to teaching evolution or not... except to note that the Church's schools (often spanked and embarrassed by it's own flock) DO teach evolution... the flock makes sure of that.

So do all church schools I know of including the christian school our kids attended for some yrs.
