It's a "two-way street" no doubt. A feedback loop that works in both directions.

"Unemployment is the cause of depression."

I would say that 'depression' is a consequence of severe and prolonged downturn in economic activity... and that employment - (being a lagging indicator and a lagging factor) - is produced by episodes of economic decline... trailing them, not leading them.
