RW, > Any other civilized country with a 'enlightened self interest' would just bail them out.

You might not want to include Korea in your list of "civilized countries," since their record for bailouts isn't very stellar.

I already stated my ideal outcome. GM declares bankruptcy and closes down half of its divisions. It survives, but in a much different form than what we're used to. The devil is in the details, but I think the economy can adapt.

By the way, this is similar to the "Good GM, Bad GM" plan being floated around, except that the "Bad GM" gets liquidated.

Nobody wants GM to go under. But GM needs to make its own way.

That cannot conceivably happen without gutting the unions.

As long as the Chapter 11 court has the power to kill the union contracts, GM will be fine.

The legalized extortion power possessed by labor unions is responsible for a significant portion of the economic disaster we have now.

It is fine for everyone to take what they can get; but these people need to weigh the benefit of having a lower paying job against having no job at all. That's what you and I do every day of our lives.
