VESA Video Interface Port (VIP) Emerges as Industry Video Interface Standard, Enabling Growth of Compatible, Low-Cost PC Video Devices,
and Paving Way to HDTV Demos expected at Fall Comdex

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announces Microsoft's endorsement of its Video Interface Port (VIP) Standard in its "Designed for Microsoft Windows" Logo Program based on the PC 98 System Design Guide.
This guide is a collaborative effort by Microsoft, Intel and the PC industry.

The VIP Specification Version 1.1 is expected to be ratified in November 1997. VESA plans VIP-based product demonstrations from its member companies at the upcoming Fall COMDEX 97 trade show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

VIP specifies the interface between the graphics controller and the video devices such as DVD and Video Decoders. It consists of two parts: a 9-pin isochronous video port, and a 4-pin bi-directional host port for control and data transfer.

The PC 98 System Design Guide acknowledges VESA's efforts -- the VESA VIP standard is "strongly recommended," and will become a requirement in the near future.

"VESA has made significant contribution to the PC industry with its VIP Standard," said Vicki Milton, Microsoft Technical Evangelist, "It bodes well with PC 98's objective in offering users a high quality video experience."

Developed jointly with over 15 member companies involved in PC video and graphics, VIP combines the advantages and avoids the pitfalls of existing proprietary standards. It offers a robust open standard to address today's high quality PC video requirements, and provides a solid foundation for future upgrades that support much more demanding applications including High Definition TV (HDTV).

"VESA VIP will be the standard interface for PC video devices in 1998 and beyond," said Chris Lam, VESA Video Port committee chairman, "The adoption of VIP by key players in PC video and graphics is a clear indication of VIPs market momentum."
