I have to tell you guys of something funny that happened a few days ago. I did a barge trip up to my other home in the San Juans of Washington State a few days ago. I tend to do that about once every two years to haul up heavy stuff that I can't haul in my boat.

The house's up there are totally off the grid because we have no submarine cable to the island as is true for most of the other islands up there. Anyway I was over at my neighbors house having dinner in the evening last Thursday night and while we were looking over to San Juan Island about 4 miles away all of their lights went out. Thought that was interesting and went home to my house a couple hours later and fired up the TV to catch the 11 pm news. 90,000 folks in three counties were without power including all of the San Juans. But for all of us off grid there was no problem! I just love that 100% reliable power.

They finally got their power back on about 5 hours later. Some lady hit a big power pole and snapped a line on the mainland about 30 miles away. Unfortunately Puget Sound Energy was doing scheduled maintence on the "back up line" at the time and it was not available to feed power in that emergency.

Gotta love that distributed generation.
