Gold was used kill minority carrier lifetime in semiconductors back in the 1960's and has been used extensively since. The purpose is to make transistors and diodes switch faster, and help get rid of "ringing" type effects in electronic circuits.

I have lots of experience using gold in semiconductor applications including diffusing gold into transistor base and collector regions. Gold has several uses in electronic device manufacture.

As energplay has pointed out, there seems to be a "ringing effect" when the price of platinum changes abruptly. This can also be reduced by investors buying small amouts of the material to sell into upward surges -g-.
