I imagine that Hawaii, with its enormous global tourism, is a terrific focal point for the latest bug.

I caught a shot on cable of Japan using infrared cameras on incoming airplane passengers to find ones with a fever. If we get an outbreak here, I will stay home.

Swine Flu Likely Spread To New Zealand

April 26, 2009 8:46 a.m. EST

David Goodhue - AHN Reporter

Auckland, New Zealand (AHN) - New Zealand health officials suspect 10 ill students who just returned from a trip abroad to Mexico have the swine flu.

The students all tested positive for Influenza A, and authorities have sent their test results to the World Health Organization (WHO) to determine whether they contracted the H1N1 virus or swine flu.

New Zealand Health Minister Tony Ryall said Sunday none of the students was seriously ill and they appear to be getting better, according to Xinhuanet.com. The students attend Rangitoto College.

There is concern other passengers on the flight the students were on from Los Angeles may also have the swine flu. Ryall encouraged people on that flight who feel ill to go to their doctor to determine if they have flu-like symptoms.

There is an excellent book by Laurie Garrett on the issue written about 20 years ago. A visionary of sorts.

"The Coming Plague." I have it on a bookshelf downstairs.

Judith Miller's "Germs" is not a bad book as well.

It was interesting to watch the parade of Washington folk on TV today, holding their news conferences that said not much of substance about the possibility of a flu pandemic.

Could it be that the swine flu will be Obama's first real crisis?
