I think the Libertarians could be a viable third party, if they fielded some reasonable candidates and moderated some of their more extreme ideologies.

Perot grew quite quickly. Look at bloomberg phenonena in NYC. Millionaire with unlimited funds can do a lot quickly as can an internet based movement raising tons of money as obama did. If its obama vs rove in 012, a centrist party will arise. Depending on how well obama policies have worked and how the split votes work, they might come in second. If GOP stays crazy, anything is possible 8 years out.
