What kind of logic is that?

Liberal logic?

The more easily someone is impressed the less desire I have to impress them. That is not to say I worry about impressing anyone regardless of how aloof they seem.

I don't assign much intelligence to people writing the news anymore, it's become a popularity contest

They may be intelligent but seem devoid of common sense. If a theory seems absurd they go with it if the person seems credible based on their belief system. Witness, the man they chose to lead their party in 2000 went on a bender over Solar Maximum flares but mislabeled the results as man made. Now that it is obvious that the theories are wrong they don't want to cover the story.

Steve, > Buying a big house you can't afford, a big car you can't afford, fancy clothes you don't need, to impress someone you can't even stand. What kind of logic is that?

The kind of logic that justifies bailing out institutions deemed "too big to fail."

The kind of logic that justifies blaming rich execs and unnamed acts of deregulation over blaming ourselves for overborrowing.

The kind of logic that justifies pushing the problem further into the future with "stimulus" and micromanagement over dealing with the core issues today.

Basically we live in an age of consumerism, and most people don't even know it.
