Polk did not hesitate to use war as a way for expansion. His own presidential campaign slogan was “Fifty-four Forty or Fight”, which suggested that he would support war against Britain if the US would not be given entire control over the Oregon territory. He did not strive to preserve peace with Mexico, since he sent 3500 troops to Texas just to settle border disputes, instructed a naval seizing of Californian ports in the event of a Mexican attack, and used a brief confrontation between US and Mexican soldiers as Mexico’s initiation of war, which gave him an excuse to declare war against it. Polk further showed his support for war as a way to acquire land after the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, following US victory of the Mexican-American War. Though it gave the US the territories of California, New Mexico, and Texas under the Rio Grande border, Polk still was unsatisfied and called for a continuation of war until all of Mexico would be obtained.
